The MADNESS of Formula E Cars
Formula E racing is intense. There are hundreds of overtakes per race, lap-long side-by-side battles, massive lunges for position, and, yes, the odd crash.
And-as I found out when I drove one-the cars are a bit of a handful.
But really, Formula E takes what’s best about old-school racing-challenging circuits, not that much aerodynamic grip-not that much mechanical grip either-and combines it with a motor that produces a good amount of power and an incredible amount of torque.
And it's about to get even faster with the introduction of their Gen3 Evo car. This machine isn’t just quick-it accelerates faster than an F1 car and can hit speeds of up to 200 mph. It’s a significant leap forward for Formula E.
So, how is this thing quicker than an F1 car?

Is Formula E Harder Than F1?
Переглядів 283 тис.Місяць тому
I’ve been lucky enough to drive both Formula 1 and Formula E cars. I’ve driven F1 cars all the way from the early 80s, all the way up to the mid-2010s. And a few weeks ago, I drove a Formula E car for the first time. But, how are they different? And which one would be the most challenging to race? Well, my answer might surprise you. Well, I wanted to take a look at the differences between F1 an...

If the old oval at Monza were repaved and brought up to snuff (re safety), and the Chicanes were removed, it would be just like it was when Indy and F1 raced there together in the 50’s. Indy would destroy F1. In its modern config, F1 easily takes it. To even things out, you could play around with the chicanes. F1’s are sprint cars. They race at max pace for an hour, then they’re done. Indy’s race for two ot three hours or longer, and they do it at top speed. Indy’s are way made to be way more durable than F1’s need to be. If you added an ovals to the F1 series, and more circuits to the Indy series, the two would start evolving similarly.

F1 buries Indy at just about any circuit with left and right turns. Indy destroys F1 at any circuit with only left turns.

Successful rally is all the co-driver, thats why you don't rely on your gut, you rely on the pace notes. The way I approach it is to realize the co-driver is the brain, does the thinking, and the driver is just hands and feet, operates the car. Once the driver has to think you are off a cliff or in a tree. Group B drivers used to famously say "the car is faster than I can think". That being said, there only so many stages and after a few years in their career rally drivers tend to remember stages that get used often, but still rely on the pace notes for the full speed runs though.

I'm old school NASCAR and haven't watched it much since the introduction of the COT. I've never watched it since they introduced stages or segments. It's just become a castrated sport equivalent of The Apprentice. It's heartening to know that their are still folks that want to test the limits.

In Australia, everything is more poisonous. Aussie Car Culture, mate. It's one thing to casually say they spent the next ten years developing... but that's 10 years of work without a promise at the end. Haha, when people argue with Peter Beck and say, "Who do you think you are, a rocket scientist ?" And he says, "Well, yes." When you have stopped consulting auto mechanics and start consulting with rocket scientists, you're in a whole other league of crazy.

The 86-96% efficiency claim for EVs is not quite correct because it is not measured from the point of power generation. Typical plant to plug efficiency is more like ~40%. Charging is ~80% efficient, and then you have 86-96% running efficiency. The EV number ends up around 27-30% efficient.

It was a dutch company, the origin of the system was called variomatic or VDT (Van Doorne Transmission) and used in DAF roadcars, later on in Volvo cars produced in Born (the Netherlands). The car is on display in the DAF museum in Eindhoven in the Netherlands. I saw information on this car and the car itself when I visited the museum. Pretty cool idea and engineering.
